Nine men and women who have proven to be highly influential in North American soccer have been chosen for induction into the United Soccer Leagues Hall of Fame in 2011 including W-League Piranha Florence Omagbemi.

As the season draws to a close, the PDL Piranhas have a huge opportunity to blast Northern Virginia’s playoff hopes right off the Sportsplex pitch.

It’s the make or break weekend for the W-League Piranhas. The hunt for a playoff spot in the Atlantic Division will come to a decision as Virginia Beach will face No.2 seed Charlotte Friday and regular season champion Atlanta on Saturday. While the Silverbacks have their first place certain, the Lady Eagles and the Piranhas will fight for second place. The top two teams in the Atlantic Division make the playoffs.

Kick-off at Richard Montgomery HS on Saturday is 7 p.m. The game against the Hotspurs will take place in the Fredericksburg afternoon sun, starting at 3 p.m. at University of Mary Washington.

After getting off to a lightning fast start that included shot after shot on goal, the PDL Piranhas allowed just one and lost to the Northern Virginia Royals 1-0 Saturday night at the Sportsplex.

The Northern Virginia Majestics and Virginia Beach Piranhas met at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex on July 2 and the Piranhas unleashed some magic of their own winning 7-0. Wednesday night on the road it was a 3-1 victory and the Piranhas won both matches with the Majestics by a commanding combined score of 10-1.

The W League Piranhas put on a scoring clinic Saturday night at the Sportsplex at the expense of the Northern Virginia Majestics, shutting them out 7-0.

The PDL Piranhas took on the second place Carolina Dynamo at the Sportsplex Wednesday night and sent the visiting team packing after a decisive, exciting, come-from-behind 3-2 win. Down 2-1, second half substitute Devin Pierce unleashed a ferocious 25-yard strike to tie the game, and Charles Nweke then beat the Dynamo’s high line and calmly placed the ball in the corner to wrap up the Piranhas 3-2 come from behind victory.
