Virginia Beach, Virginia – The highly anticipated showdown between the USA and England on June 12 in the 2010 World Cup ended in a 1-1 draw. Now, it all comes down to Tuesday night at the Sportsplex in Virginia Beach when the PDL Piranhas take on the Royal Marines. Who will be victorious in this rivalry that began 7,897 miles away in Rustenburg, South Africa?
The Royal Marines were founded in 1684. The Royal Marines Football Association began play in 1892 with two teams, ‘Royal Marines Light Infantry’ & ‘Royal Marines Artillery’. These two formations merged in 1923 to become ‘His Majesties Corps of Royal Marines’, The Royal Marines. The RMFA’s most notable achievement to date was in 1910 when the ‘Royal Marines Light Infantry’ won the English Football Association Amateur Cup, beating South Bank of Middlesbrough 2-1.
The PDL Piranhas were founded in 2006 as the Virginia Beach Submariners but the name was changed under new ownership in 2007 to the Hampton Roads PDL Piranhas. The Piranhas’ have many achievements, too, most notably winning the Premier Development League regular season championship in 2007.
Can the upstart Piranhas prevail over the storied history of the Royal Marines? Could the upstart band of revolutionaries defeat the superiority of the British in a battle that began on April 19, 1775 and ended on October 19, 1781 in Yorktown, Virginia, just 42 miles from the Sportsplex? The upstarts won that conflict, too!!!!
Come out and support your team Tuesday night. Wear your USA and Piranhas’ gear. Bring your flags and cheer on your team! This match, too, is for honor and country. Tickets are just $5 at the gate!
