Greensboro, North Carolina – The PDL Piranhas traveled to MacPherson Stadium to face the Carolina Dynamo Saturday night and came away with their first win of the 2010 season, beating Carolina 2-1. The two teams met on May 30 at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex with Carolina coming out on top 4-1.
The Piranhas (1-4-2) took the early lead in the second minute of play when Piranhas forward Mamadou Kone was fouled by the Carolina keeper in the box. Renato Barbosa took the Piranhas up 1-0 with the resulting penalty kick.
Hampton Roads went up 2-0 at the 25-minute mark on a score by Jordan Cyrus who netted a corner kick from Thomas Schmitt. Carolina (3-4-1) made it 2-1 eight minutes later but the Piranhas’ defense held for the remainder of the match.
“It was good to get our first win,” said Piranhas head coach Leroi Wilson. “We have nine games remaining in our season and if we continue to play like we did tonight, anything is possible.”
The PDL Piranhas will host the Royal Marines Football Association on Tuesday night, June 15 at 7 p.m. in an exhibition at the Sportsplex. Tickets for the international friendly are just $5 at the gate.
The team’s next regular season match will be on June 19 at 5:30 p.m. when the team hosts Central Jersey in the first half of a doubleheader with the W-League Piranhas. The women’s side will host Northern Virginia at 8 p.m.
