PDL PIRANHAS DROP STOPPAGE TIME HEARTBREAKER 2-1 IN SEASON FINALE

Dumphries, Virginia – The PDL Piranhas closed out their 2010 season Sunday night dropping a 91th minute heartbreaker to the Northern Virginia Royals 2-1. The teams were playing in a Princess Anne Park-like setting at Hellwig Memorial Park, when the Royals announced a change in venues on Thursday but the change in fields was kind to the Royals. The Royals pulled off the win in the 91st minute of play.

The first half went scoreless for the second time in two games between the sides and the deciding goals of both games were scored in stoppage time. The two teams faced off on Friday, Jul 23, at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex with the Piranhas coming back to earn a 91st minute 2-2 draw.

The Royals got on the board first when midfielder Richard Edgar scored with an assist from forward Stanley Kaweesi in the 50th minute. Piranhas forward Renato Barbosa tied it up in the 75th minute unassisted when the Royals’ goalkeeper Harry Lockwood mishandled a shot and Barbosa netted the rebound.

The game became more hotly contested with fouls adding up on both sides but the draw held until stoppage time. Royals’ leading scorer Kaweesi netted the game winner with an assist from Steve Duran in the 91st minute.

Piranhas’ head coach Leroi Wilson briefly summed up the 2010 season. “You learn as you go in this League,” he said. We won some games we shouldn’t have won and lost some games we shouldn’t have lost. We played well sometimes and didn’t play well at other times. It’s been a rebuilding year with only three returning players from 2009 and we’re going to work very hard in the off season to be ready for 2011.”
