VIRGINIA BEACH PIRANHAS ANNOUNCE 2011 W-LEAGUE SCHEDULE
Women’s team kicks off May 14 vs. Charlotte at the Sportsplex

TAMPA, FL –United Soccer Leagues released the 2011 W-League schedule and divisional alignments today. Saturday May 14 marks the opening of the 158-game regular season that also includes the season opener for the Virginia Beach Piranhas. The W-League kicks off its 17th season as do the W-League Piranhas.

 For the third consecutive year, the Piranhas’ W-League season will open with a match against the Charlotte Lady Eagles in a showdown of two of the league’s oldest teams. The match on Saturday, May 14, will be held at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex at 8 p.m. and will begin the Piranhas ten-game regular season campaign which will close on July 16 at Atlanta. The schedule includes three doubleheaders with the Piranhas’ men’s squad, the PDL Piranhas.
 
Once again, the Piranhas’ women’s squad will be competing in the USL’s Eastern Conference, Atlantic Division with Charlotte, Dayton, Fredericksburg, Atlanta and Northern Virginia.
 
The W-League will feature 27 teams in three geographic conferences – Eastern Conference, Central Conference and Western Conference. New to the W-League in 2011 are the Fredericksburg Impact, Washington FC, Dayton Dutch Lions, LA Strikers and Victoria Highlanders, while the Hampton Roads Piranhas have become the Virginia Beach Piranhas. The full 2011 W-League postseason format will be announced at a later date.
 
“With our 2011 opening day fast approaching we are looking forward to our first game against one of the top teams in our division,” said head coach Wendy Waddell. “Our schedule is going to be action packed and exciting for all of our fans, especially our double headers with the men’s team where you can see two games in one night.  We hope to bring a lot of entertainment to our community every weekend and look forward to a successful season.”

The schedule features old rivalries such as Charlotte, Northern Virginia, and Atlanta, but also offers the fans two new teams to check out from Dayton and Fredericksburg.”
