W-LEAGUE PIRANHAS GO TO 2-0 WITH SHUTOUT WIN OVER NORTHERN VIRGINIA
Forward Shaneka Gordon scores twice in second half to give Piranhas 2-0 win
Virginia Beach, Virginia – Piranhas forward/midfielder Shaneka Gordon, came off the bench in the second half and scored two goals in five minutes to give the Piranhas a 2-0 win over the Northern Virginia Lady Majestics at Virginia Wesleyan College Saturday night. The Piranhas’ W-League side is now 2-0 on the season.
The Piranhas dominated the first half, not allowing a single shot on goal for the Lady Majestics. Despite their dominance the Piranhas were unable to capitalize and put a goal on the board. The first half ended 0-0.
The Piranhas came out in the second half with the same authority and took control.  Shaneka Gordon, who entered at the 45 minute mark, scored twice for the red and white, once in the 74th minute and again in the 79th minute. Her first goal came on an assist from head coach/player Wendy Waddell who sent a strong pass from midfield over the Majestics defenders and found Gordon. Gordon chipped the ball over goalkeeper Kerri Butler’s head to take the Piranhas up 1-0. Her second strike came off an assist from midfielder Emily Kittleson who sent a cross from the left side that found Gordon at the back post. The Piranhas defense was stifling, holding Northern Virginia to zero shots on goal for the match.
Gordon, from Old Harbour, Jamaica and the University of West Florida, was named the 2008 Daktronics Ron Lenz National Player of the Year, Daktronics First Team All-American, NSCAA First Team All-American, Daktronics South Region Player of the Year, Gulf South Conference Player of the Year, Daktronics South Region First Team, NSCAA South Region First Team, and Gulf South Conference First Team. She led her team with 23 goals and 58 points and added a team second best 12 assists while at UWF.
