PIRANHAS MERCY AKIDE-UDOH NAMED TO W-LEAGUE TEAM OF THE WEEK
Five W-League Piranhas Players Have Been Honored This Season
Tampa, Florida - United Soccer Leagues announced today the W-League Team of the Week for the ninth week of USL competition.
Included in the honorees for the second time this season is Piranhas forward Mercy Akide-Udoh who was named for her two unassisted goals in the Piranhas’ 2-1 win over Cary on June 21.
Four weeks out of nine so far this season, a member of the W-League Piranhas has been selected to the W-League Team of the Week. Forward Akide-Ukoh and midfielder Kim Francis were named for their performances in the Piranhas’ 2-1 come-from-behind win over Charlotte on May 7 and forward Shaneka Gordon was named for her two-goal performance in the team’s 2-0 win over the Northern Virginia Majestics on May 16. Midfielder Angela Salem was honored for her two-goal, one-assist outing against the Richmond Kickers Destiny on June 6.
Akide-Udoh has played for the Piranhas for eight seasons, signing initially in 2000. She joined the San Diego Spirit of the WUSA in 2001 and 2002 and returned to the Piranhas in 2003 to help the team win the W-League Championship. She also sat out the 2007 season for the birth of her daughter Colleen.
The Piranhas play their next game on Friday June 26th at Foster Field in the second game of a double header against the Charlotte Lady Eagles. Kick-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.
