W-LEAGUE PIRANHAS FALL TO CHARLOTTE LADY EAGLES 1-0
(Norfolk, Virginia) - The W-League Piranhas dropped their Friday night game 1-0 to the Charlotte Lady Eagles. This was the second meeting this year between the two teams; the Piranhas won the first meeting 2-1 on May 8 in Charlotte.
The first half settled into a defensive battle. Midway into the period, Piranhas goalkeeper Vicky Johnson made a spectacular save, batting away a shot at the left post to keep the Lady Eagles scoreless. The Piranhas outshot the Lady Eagles 9-3 but the half ended 0-0.
The defensive battle continued into the second half until the 64th minute when Charlotte forward Christy Rife headed in a long throw in from the right sideline to put the Lady Eagles up 1-0. Even though the Piranhas outshot the visitors 15-7 for the night, they could not find the back of the net.
The W-League Piranhas travel to Cary to face the Lady Clarets on Sunday, June 28th in the second half of a doubleheader with the PDL Piranhas and Cary’s men’s squad. Both Piranhas teams return home July 10 for their last doubleheader of the season when the men will face West Virginia at 5:30 p.m. followed by the W-League side hosting Tampa Bay at 8 p.m.
